UWA and WASO: New course embeds music students into professional orchestra

Life

Professional musicians and outstanding post-graduate students will work side by side in a unique  masters degree program being launched by The University of Western Australia (UWA) and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO).

To bridge the gap between student life and a professional music career, this unique course blends research and professional performance experience. Students will be given direct access to WASO musicians through mentoring, individual lessons and professional performance opportunities sitting side by side with these exceptional players. This course is the only masters in orchestral performance with a research and practical component  offered in Australia.

The Master of Music (Orchestral Performance) is now open for application.

“This new course for aspiring orchestral musicians is the best in the country”, said Professor Alan Lourens, Head of UWA Conservatorium of Music. “It offers students complete immersion in one of the nation’s finest orchestras, and more flexibility of research in performance topics than any other postgrad course in Australia.”

“WASO is proud of its role as a leader in the development of the next generation of conductors, composers and musicians.” said Craig Whitehead, Chief Executive at WASO. “This is extremely important work and we are thrilled to partner with the outstanding UWA Con in delivering their masters students mentoring and side-by-side opportunities with the extraordinary musicians of WASO.”
