Life

Winning over the hearts and stomachs of Perth, Rossonero Pizzeria serves up 15 tantalising toppings for pizza-lovers in a laidback laneway warehouse conversion.

They say to never judge a book by its cover. They don’t say to never judge a pizza by its name. With menu items such as Vamp Killer, Sweet Cheesus, Pumped Up Kicks and Glaze of Glory, it’s best to bring the whole gang for pizza because you’ll be wanting to try the lot.

Fil Pakioufakis and his partner Natalie Atkins thought a pizza joint could work in the right area. Toing and froing between North Fremantle and Maylands, it was the latter that won the prize because of its blank canvas, and Rossonero was born. “We made a clear commitment to ourselves that our aim wasn’t to make the best pizza in town, but to make an honest pizza by our own standards,” explains Fil. “We can’t pretend to be Italian with some sort of pizza lineage, so we haven’t tried to be.” It’s this honesty that has earned Fil and the team an impressively loyal following since its May 2017 opening in the beautifully refitted warehouse in Lyric Lane. Having grown up around the family table, it was this atmosphere that Fil and Natalie wanted to recreate in a small place for a community to enjoy, with affordability in mind.

Borrowing some basic elements from Italy (such as using a method of resting the dough for a minimum of 72 hours), pizza toppings have been designed to take you on a modern and adventurous journey.

From the pairing of hot sopressa, tomatoes, mozzarella, chilli, parmesan, honey and fresh basil on the Honey I’m Home to the combination of brussel sprouts, pancetta, buffalo mozzarella, garlic oil and parmesan on the Brussel Crowe, spectacular pizzas are served with a sense of humour.
