14 productions risk it all in our 2019 season – The Blue Room Theatre Turns 30

For the first time in its history The Blue Room Theatre will this year present a single season of work between April to December that launches this week. Western Australian artists have stepped up to the challenge, stretching their imagination and ambition to fill the year with some of the most exciting work the venue has seen to date.

The artistic talented in the season ranges from the fresh faced to the iconic, with work spanning from dark to euphoric. An ambitious team of WAAPA students and grads will present Miss Westralia, a new musical telling the remarkable but little known story of Geraldton’s Beryl Mills, the first Miss Australia. Much loved Perth performer Humphrey Bower (WISH, SKIN) continues to stretch his artistic limits in a nightmarish exploration of asylum and detention on Australia’s doorstep, using stories by Franz Kafka.

Among the 14 shows, Red Ryder Productions (Grounded) presents the WA Premiere of international smash-hit play The Wolves, the Pulitzer nominated script about a team of young, indoor-soccer playing warrior women. Static Drive Co talk dirty with See You Next Tuesday, a touching comedy about sex, high school, and the messiness of puberty. And, to finish the season, renowned choreographer Shona Erskine and Pina Bausch Fellow Scott Elstermann combine forces in BANG! BANG!, a double header ranging from Wes Anderson to scorned lovers tochallenge everything you think you know about contemporary dance.

Producer Harriet Roberts couldn’t be more exhilarated by the works that will mark this inaugural April – December season. “Our 2019 Season is filled with heart and hard-work. These fourteen productions showcase the energy and inspiration in our local crop of performers. They’re rich in personal journeys, political critique, historical significance and amazing movement. Now more than ever we’re seeing artists ready and raring to take risks in their practice. These real and urgent stories are told by trailblazers exploring theatrical forms in ways audiences haven’t seen before.”

The Blue Room Theatre continues to showcase Western Australia’s uniquely bustling independent theatre scene, and bring you what’s new in theatre and live performance.
