Margaret River’s artisan distillery, SouWester Spirits, has walked away from the annual Tasting Australia Spirit Awards with a Silver Medal.
Australia’s spirits industry is burgeoning with new products and this festival is a celebration of our country’s best artisanal distillers.
The winners were determined through two days of intensive tasting by a panel of expert judges led by World Whisky Award Hall of Fame inductee Bill Lark, of Tasmania’s Lark Distillery.
“The entries across the board this year were just sensational, with gold medals and trophies awarded in all classes. The quality of spirits coming out of Australia at the moment is just incredible, and every year it goes up a level,” Lark says.
SouWester Spirits founder, Danielle Costley, said awards such as these help to launch small distillers nationwide.
“We only produce around 400 bottles per batch, so we carefully select which festival we enter into each year. Last year, we won a bronze medal at these awards and this year we beat that with a Silver Medal. Who knows what next year will bring as we will have three new products launched in the market by then?” she says.
Described as ‘soft botanicals, with discreet oak handling and a light frame driven by clean bright spirit’, the SouWester Iced Gin was created to pay homage to Western Australia’s Margaret River wine and food region.
“Our gin offers a taste of the South West region in every sip and it is great to see judges such as Bill Lark recognise the quality of our gin with this medal win,” Danielle adds.
