And the winners are…

Design

From a $1.4 billion hospital to a micro-house sitting on a 168sqm block, the diversity of the 2019 Australian Institute of Architects’ Western Australian Awards highlighted the exciting and ever-changing landscape of WA.

Reminiscing his time in architecture over the past 25 years ahead of last night’s Awards, Australian Institute of Architects WA Chapter president Peter Hobbs said that WA really is becoming its own city.

“If I was an architect practicing in Rome I would get to do some lovely little alterations on some 17th century building, but I’d never get the chance to build a bold new apartment building,” Peter said. “I think we’re very lucky as a profession in this state for the prospects that it presents.”

Guests of the 2019 WA Architecture Awards gathered at the award-winning Optus Stadium. Enjoying views across the river and back to the city, it provided the opportunity to reflect on what has been achieved in architecture over the past year.

Described as a truly inspired creation by jurors, Perth Children’s Hospital was awarded the most esteemed accolade, the George Temple Poole Award. Designed as a joint venture between JCY Architects and Urban Designers, Cox Architecture and Billard Leece Partnership with HKS, the project combines light, airy, colourful and playful spaces with beautiful art and views to the bush land of Kings Park.

“The design team have created a high quality, people-first environment that changes our perception of what a hospital can be… Medical equipment is diminished in scale through the skilled use of colour, which combined with a high level of art and functionality works to create an amazing ‘wonderland’ for children in need of specialist care,” the jury said.

It didn’t stop there for Perth Children’s Hospital, with the project also taking out The Jeffrey Howlett Award for Public Architecture, The Wallace Greenham Award for Sustainable Architecture, and The Julius Elischer Award for Interior Architecture.

HASSELL’s Westin Hotel received The Ross Chisholm and Gil Nicol Award for Commercial Architecture, with jurors impressed with the establishment of a hospitality and retail precinct that acknowledges the heritage of the site and the connections and benefits it provides for patron and public enjoyment.

MORQ’s Cloister House took home The Marshall Clifton Award for Residential Architecture – Houses (New) for its unconventional response to increased suburban density.

Still only a few months into his first year as WA Chapter president, Peter says that while impressive and certainly deserving of recognition, the Awards do reflect just a tiny piece of what architects do throughout the state.

“Generally speaking, we have about 1200 architects here in Western Australia who are all charging along doing their very best on a vast array of projects,” he said. “There are so many projects like community halls and primary schools that are all fulfilling their functions, and I think it’s important that we also celebrate the baseline quality that architects provide.

What’s great about this young Chapter is that the people that are participating are in their 30’s and 40’s and are bringing plenty of energy to the industry.”

All Western Australian Named and Architecture Award winners will progress to the Australian Institute of Architects National Awards to be judged against the very best architectural works in the country.
