Melbourne-based photographer Maegan Brown has been confirmed as the first east-coast recipient of Tapped By Otherside’s Creative Release grant.
Otherside’s Creative Release is a WA-based visual arts grants program that celebrates the works of young artists and creatives by immortalising their works on cans of Otherside beer. Annually, four artists are chosen to have their artwork featured on Otherside cans for three months and receive a $1,000 grant and exhibition sponsorship. This is the first time that the award has been given to a recipient based outside of Western Australia.
Maegan’s work entitled Rain Bath will now adorn cans of Headliner IIPA which will be released nationally from this week.
Originally from Perth, Maegan has called Melbourne home for the last five years. A trained graphic designer, she made a successful transition into photography just a few years ago.
Commenting on her design, Maegan said she explored the interaction of light, shadow and space and used the double exposure technique to layer two images into the one in a nod to the complexity of the double IPA varietal.
“I think the image speaks to the strength and boldness of a double IPA, in particular scaling up the tropical leaf with the big water droplets to relate to those big, juicy, fresh flavour notes. It’s been a really fun process and I’m thrilled to know my design will now be on cans of Otherside beer!”
Otherside General Manager Steve Finney complemented Maegan’s design and declared the grant’s first east coast grant recipient a significant milestone.
“We launched our Creative Release series and grant program a year ago with Headliner. Since then the program has rapidly gaining traction among WA’s creative circles with more than 100 entries received. It is very exciting to see that connection to our brand now widening to include creatives based on the east coast.
“Maegan’s selection is also timely. She is our first east coast based Creative Series grant recipient and her artwork will be captured on cans of Headliner IIPA which will be amongst the first cans of Otherside beer to be available nationally as part of our new online shipping offer.
“From this week Otherside beers will be available to purchase online for delivery nationally. We have a lot of Otherside fans located around Australia so it’s great, from this week, to be able to confirm ‘to your door’ delivery across the country.”
Headliner IIPA 2020, is a juicier version of the Otherside annual IIPA, still dripping with resinous flavour. At eight per cent, the hop combination of two old favourites and two new ones, delivers a blend of pine, mango, passionfruit, white grape and citrus, on a bedrock of dank.
Headliner IIPA is available online at www.othersidebrewing.com.au and in selected retail stores from this week.
Applications for the next Creative Release grant – Feedback – will open Monday 17 August and must be submitted via the Tapped By Otherside website at http://www.tappedbyotherside.com. Nominations will close at 5pm Sunday 27 September 2020.
