FORM is proud to present Our Painting About Ngurra, a group exhibition by the Spinifex Hill Artists, Port Hedland’s only Aboriginal art collective, opening at The Goods Shed in Claremont on Thursday 14 October.
The Spinifex Hill Artists work from South Hedland’s Spinifex Hill Studio, one of the Pilbara’s youngest and leading Aboriginal art centres, which is managed by FORM.
Our Painting About Ngurra features over 60 stunning new works by the Spinifex Hill Artists. Alongside paintings by nationally-renowned artists such as Nyangulya Katie Nalgood, Doreen Chapman and Gloria, Perth audiences will receive an introduction to some of the Studio’s rising stars, including Lena Alone, Gladys Kuru Bidu and Beryl Ponce. The exhibition will also showcase haunting new landscapes by Lester Prize shortlisted artist Ilyampi Victor Burton.
Meaning both ‘Country’ and ‘home’ in Western Desert languages, Ngurra is a popular subject matter the Spinifex Hill Artists often refer and return to in their work.

About Spinifex HillSpinifex Hill Studio is one of the Pilbara’s leading Aboriginal art centres, and home to the Spinifex Hill Artists (SHA), Port Hedland’s only Aboriginal art collective. More than 100 artists from multiple language groups access the Studio annually. The SHA consistently participates in major national Indigenous events such as Revealed, Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, and Tarnanthi, in addition to regular exhibitions across Australia and internationally. SHA have works represented in major national collections including Artbank, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Holmes a Court, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art. In July 2021, Spinifex Hill Studio expanded to include the Spinifex Hill Project Space.
