“Eat Local” – The Beaufort (from Issue 13)

Opening its doors as we go to print, this exciting multi-venue hospitality offering is the second for Nokturnl, the award-winning team behind The Old Synagogue in Fremantle.

But in contrast to working within and around a heritage building, this new project on Beaufort Street in Highgate started with a blank canvas and a lot of space – on the site of the old Empire warehouse. The result is the ultimate adult playground, looking to be quite unlike anything else in Perth.

Inspired by the works of MC Ecsher, The Beaufort invites guests to lose themselves in its three floors of innovation, charm and intrigue. The building flows from a large playful roof-top terrace known as the Candy Bar, down to a dance floor that surrounds a central tiered jungle, and further down to an outdoor beer and wine garden on the Beaufort Street strip.

Spread across the three levels is modern south-east Asian restaurant Lotus, where

Nokturnl’s executive chef Leigh Power – from Melbourne’s Ginger Boy and more recently The Old Synagogue – has teamed up with acclaimed Melbourne chef Sundoo Kim to create a fantastic share-style menu.

And yes, just like The Old Synagogue, there is a door hidden within the depths of the building – this one leading to a speakeasy called Cypher. Navigate past the Cyrillic projector and find this quirky cocktail bar that has one of the largest spirit collections in Perth, a spectacular cocktail list and live music each night covering a range of genres.
