Western Australian Hip Hop Art Dance Crew ‘The Society’, WINS top title Internationally at Canadian Dance industries Hip Hop Competition ‘Dancers Paradise’ in Cancun MEXICO this May.
Canadian Dancers Paradise, established in 2016, as the ultimate dance experience, hosted exclusively at the 5-star, 4-diamond Moon Palace Resort in Cancun Mexico. Bringing together an international dance community from around the world to compete and workshop amongst fellow Hip Hop dancers.
WA’s The Society Academy, which was established by co-owners Una Genuino and Reah Lopez, is home to a number of dance crews, including their elite adult mega crew ‘The Society’ who train to compete and showcase at National and International competitions and showcases.
Last year due to the Covid travel ban, The Society competed in Queensland in the newly established Hip Hop Dance Competition DANCHELLA which attracted crews from all over Australia and New Zealand. The Society’s mega crew ‘WON’ that competition in April 2022, placing them as the best hip hop dancers from Australia and New Zealand. After that win and with the borders finally open for International travel, a select crew of over 20 Adult dancers was again put together to compete internationally in the renowned Dancers Paradise Competition in Cancun Mexico this May 2023.
Prior to competing all crew members committed to an intensive training schedule many times a week. Choreography for their piece came from within the crew from the coaches and selected dancers who combined have over 20 years of experience in various ART forms, disciplines and techniques.
Before travelling to Cancun Mexico to compete ‘The Society’ performed their winning piece to loved ones, unbeknown to them they would be watching what would be judged as the best danced, choreographed, performed and presented visually dance piece they had seen. Wowing judges with their unique style, Australia’s Perth based ‘The Society’s’ win was ahead of, second place Arizona USA and Auckland New Zealand in third place.
The Society is known within the Hip Hop Australian and New Zealand dance scene and after their WIN in Mexico, now on an international level.
On winning Dancers Paradise 2023, Society announced “We are so proud to have brought this piece to life, to share our stories, to showcase our strengths and to represent our people, the land in which we train on, the people who support us, our community and most importantly ART through movement and story-telling.”
