22nd July – 26th September

Ngardamarri, at The Goods Shed

Ngardamarri showcases the rich and diverse artistic practice of artists from the Pilbara town of Ieramagadu (Roebourne).

FORM, in partnership with Ieramagadu-based art centres – Cheeditha Art Group, Juluwarlu Art Group, and Yinjaa-Barni Art – is privileged to present the group exhibition Ngardamarri, opening at The Goods Shed on Thursday 22 July.

There is an unmistakable creative energy emanating from the small town of Ieramagadu. Meaning side-by-side in Yindjibarndi language, Ngardamarri brings together senior and emerging artists from Cheeditha Art Group, Juluwarlu Art Group and Yinjaa-Barni Art, plus independent artist Chenise Cameron, to shine a light on the stories, talent and artistic diversity in this dynamic community.Since mid-2020, FORM has been working with these artists to deliver a series of arts practice and professional skills workshops. Ngardamarri celebrates the artists who were part of this and provides Perth audiences with an opportunity to see some of the stunning results.

Exhibition curator Annie McLoughlin says, “It has been an absolute privilege for FORM to work with the artists of Cheeditha Art Group, Juluwarlu Art Group, and Yinjaa-Barni Art on Ngardamarri, and we’re honoured to be presenting such a special showcase of compelling art from some of the region’s most remarkable artists. We strongly encourage Perth audiences to join us in celebrating the artwork and artists of this vibrant artistic community.”

Ngardamarri features over 45 new works by Cheeditha Art Group’s Kaye Warrie, Sharon Warrie and Wendy Warrie; Juluwarlu Art Group’s Banyji Pansy Cheedy, Jane Cheedy, Tootsie Daniel, Alice Guiness, Wendy Hubert and Denise Kelly; Yinjaa-Barni Art’s Marlene Harold, Maudie Jerrold, Aileen Sandy, Allery Sandy, Melissa Sandy and Justina Willis, and independent artist Chenise Cameron.

From vibrant and distinctly patterned paintings, to bold large-scale canvases, works on paper and carved yarranga marni boards and scratchboards, Ngardamarri is a joyful celebration of contemporary artmaking, rooted in an intrinsic connection to Country, culture and history.

There is a palpable feeling of excitement surrounding the opening of the exhibition. Cheeditha artist Wendy Warrie, whose paintings feature mesmeric lines of tidal flows, rugged coastlines and mountain ranges, is thrilled about this opportunity. “It feels good being an artist… I’ve been making art for a long time now and I feel proud to be sharing my paintings alongside my sisters and artists from my community.”

Artist and Elder Tootsie Daniel from Juluwarlu Art Group, whose artwork references the river systems of her Country, is proud to be sharing her artwork and connecting with new audiences. “My artwork is like I’m on a journey of healing… I’ve got a new style and new techniques. I like to use bright colours. It reflects a brighter picture. I want my art to touch people and to be drawn to my paintings. I want my paintings to speak to people. This is what I’m excited for,” Daniel explained.

Yinjaa-Barni artist and Chairperson Allery Sandy, who is known for her aerial depictions celebrating the wildflowers, creeks and rivers of her Country, has also expressed her excitement about Ngardamarri. “All the artists are very excited to travel down and see the art hanging on the walls. It is a joy to share our art and we are looking forward to meeting and sharing our stories about our paintings to those who attend.”

Artists will travel from Ieramagadu to Perth for the launch of Ngardamarri, which will take place over two evenings. The evening of Thursday 22 July offers an exclusive preview for FORM Members followed by a public opening celebration. On Friday 23 July, artists will participate in an artist talk and exhibition tour, providing an intimate insight into their individual artistic processes and the creative practices in Ieramagadu community.

All works will be available for sale along with a selection of unstretched canvases from each of the art centres.
